couple_older_1.jpgGingivitis (gum inflammation) is primarily caused by bacterial plaque (biofilm).  This infection causes the gums to appear red, swollen and to bleed easily.  There may be little to no discomfort associated with this stage of the disease. With a good oral hygiene regimen and treatment, the symptoms of gingivitis can be controlled-returning the gums to a state of health.

You can view a brief video on gingivitis and its treatment here.

Persistent gingivitis or gum enlargement is an indicator of more serious conditions and should be evaluated.
