Non-Surgical Therapy

.

Even when periodontal disease is in a fairly advanced stage, it is possible to improve the condition with non-surgical procedures.

One option is a procedure called Periodontal Scaling. This treatment is used to remove bacterial plaque and calculus from the tooth. It is often necessary to go below the gums to remove the disease causing bacteria and toxins on the root surface. After removal of the bacteria and toxins, the root of the tooth may need smoothing to complete the process using a procedure called root planing.

Periodontal scaling along with root planing serve to make it much easier for the gum tissue to adhere itself to the tooth root and effectively shrinks the gum pockets that the bacterial plaque hide in.

Along with these procedures, you may be prescribed either locally administered or systemic antibiotics.
